Surgery and Blood Testing

Dr. Sanderlin and her team provide many surgical services at Sanderlin Veterinary Hospital, ranging from routine to advanced procedures. We take every precaution to assure your pet receives the highest-quality care.
We understand the decision to allow your beloved companion to undergo surgery is never an easy one. Our goal is to put you at ease and ensure your pet’s procedure is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
Prior to any procedure, we will explain to you why we believe a particular procedure is necessary and what it entails. We will provide you with information on proper postoperative care and answer any questions you may have so you are comfortable knowing you are making the right choice for your pet.
We perform a physical exam and preanesthetic testing before surgery, monitor your pet during surgery, and provide appropriate pain medication to keep your pet comfortable during recovery.

Anesthesia and Pre-Op Testing
Today’s modern anesthetic monitors have made surgery much safer than in the past. Here at Sanderlin Veterinary Hospital, we perform a thorough physical exam on your pet before administering anesthetics to ensure that a fever or other illness won’t be a problem. We also adjust the amount and type of anesthetic used depending on the health of your pet.
Preanesthetic blood testing is important in reducing the risk of anesthesia. We recommend that every pet receive blood testing before surgery to ensure that liver and kidney function are adequate to handle the anesthetic. Even apparently healthy animals can have serious organ system problems that cannot be detected without blood testing. If there is a problem, it is much better to find out before it causes anesthetic or surgical complications. If serious problems are detected, surgery can be postponed until the problem is corrected.
Pain Management
We all know pain hurts, but pain also has many other detrimental effects on your pet’s body. Pain can slow healing, decrease activity, cause behavioral changes such as aggression, anxiety, and depression, and worsen diseases like arthritis and potentially some cancers. It also interferes with the bond between you and your pet.
We practice the most current pain management protocol at Sanderlin Veterinary Hospital. For acute and chronic conditions, we use all our available and safe resources, including NSAIDS (non-steroidal medications) and oral and injectable analgesics, for the complete comfort of your pet.
More Complex Surgeries
We want our patients to receive the best possible outcome, so we occasionally refer them to specialists (board-certified veterinary surgeons) to perform complex operations when advanced equipment or training will be beneficial.
